Kallada Valiyapally: A Historic Church
St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church in West Kallada is a very important place for many people. It is one of the main pilgrimage centers for the Malankara Church. This church has a long history, going all the way back to the 9th century AD.
Church records show that the first church in Kallada was destroyed. This happened because of fights between the leaders of East and West Kallada. Later, a woman from the Thulassery Manapurathu family found the cross from the destroyed church in the river. She convinced the Queen of West Kallada to give land for a new church. The queen agreed after receiving valuable gifts.
The Kallada St. Mary's ValiyaPalli, also known as Thulassery Manapurathu Marthamariyam Church, was built by people who came to Kollam from West Asia in the 9th century AD. The church was very respected, and this is shown by the special place given to the church's horse in the 'kettukaazhcha' festival. This also shows how people from different groups lived together peacefully back then. Many priests from the ThulasseryManapurathu family have been buried inside the church.
The Tomb of Mar Anthrayos Bava
The tomb of Mar Anthrayos Bava, also known as Kallada Valiyappoon, is located in this church. Because of his tomb, the church is also called Mar Anthrayos Pilgrim Church.
Mar Andrews Bava arrived in Mulanhthurthy in 1678 with his three brothers. He stayed there for a long time. Later, he traveled eastward because some local people were not very cooperative.
He then reached Vettikkal, which was a trading center. There, he found a small chapel. He bought some land nearby and started living there. One of his brothers stayed in Mulanthuruthy and started a family. Famous religious leaders like Parumala Thirumeni came from this family line.
From Vettikkal, Mar Andrews Bava traveled to other places like Kuruppampadi and Puthenkavu. Finally, he reached Kallada. He was drawn to a Christian church dedicated to Mother Mary that was built in the 9th century AD. The Thulassery Manapurathu Tharavad family, who were the traditional priests of the Kallada Valiyapally, welcomed him. Mar Andrews Bava spent his final days in Kallada.
When he passed away, he was buried inside the church. Many people believe they received blessings through his prayers, which showed his holiness. He died on the 19th day of the Malayalam month of Kumbham. His special commemoration festival is celebrated on that day.
The Mar Andrews Commemoration Festival at St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church in West Kallada is celebrated on March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This corresponds to the 18th and 19th days of the Malayalam month of Kumbham. [1]
