Town History
Westby was started in 1910. It was first located in Williams County, North Dakota (which is now Divide County).
Danish settlers gave the town its name. They combined the word west because the town was in western North Dakota. They added by, which means "town" in the Danish language.
In 1914, the town moved a short distance. It moved across the border into Montana. This move put it next to a new train track from the Soo Line Railroad. It also moved to a state where selling alcohol was allowed.
