History of Westfield Annapolis
Early Days and Opening
Before the mall was built, this spot was a train station. It was part of the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway. This station was called "Best Gate." The nearby Bestgate Road got its name from this old train stop.
In the 1970s, a Montgomery Ward store stood alone here. Then, in 1980, a new shopping mall was built around it. Montgomery Ward became one of the first big stores, or "anchors," in the mall. Other early anchor stores included Garfinckel's and Hecht's.
Mall Expansions and New Stores
The mall grew bigger over time. In 1983, a JCPenney store was added. Garfinckel's closed in 1990.
In 1994, the mall expanded again. A two-level Nordstrom store opened. The food court, where you can buy food, also got bigger. In 1998, a Lord & Taylor store opened. An 11-screen movie theater also opened that year.
Changes in Anchor Stores
Over the years, some stores left and new ones arrived. The Montgomery Ward store closed in 2001. A Sears store took its place in 2002. In 2006, Hecht's became a Macy's store.
Another big expansion happened in 2007. This included making the JCPenney store even larger. The old Garfinckel's space later became a Borders Books and Music store. That bookstore closed in 2011. Today, a two-level Forever 21 store is in that spot.
Recent Store Closures
In 2017, it was announced that Lord & Taylor would close. It shut its doors in April 2018. The mall later changed this space. It reopened in September 2020 with new stores.
Sears also announced its closure in February 2020. It closed in April 2020. Then, in May 2020, Nordstrom said it would close many stores, including the one in Annapolis. It permanently closed in July 2020.
After these closures, JCPenney and Macy's became the only original anchor stores left.
