The Church's Journey: A History
Westminster Presbyterian Church started in 1857. Eight people from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales came together to form the church.
First Church Building
In 1860, the church built its first home. It was on Fourth Street in downtown Minneapolis. This was between Nicollet and Hennepin Avenues. The church grew quickly, so it soon needed a bigger space.
Second Church Building
Because the church was growing, a new, larger building was started in 1883. This second church was at Seventh Street and Nicollet Avenue.
Just twelve years after it opened, a big fire badly damaged this second church. This fire meant the church had to move again.
Current Church Building
The church then moved to its current spot. This is at Twelfth Street and Nicollet Mall. The new building opened for services in 1897.
Two famous Minneapolis architects designed the current church. They were Warren Howard Hayes and Charles Sumner Sedgwick. They worked together on the design.
In 1998, the church building turned 100 years old. To celebrate, the church did a big renovation. This project cost $3.5 million. It brought back many of the original designs inside the church. It also made the building stronger and improved the lights and sound. The newly updated church opened for services on December 20, 1998.
A Recognized Landmark
Westminster Presbyterian Church is very important. It has a lot of history and means a lot to the community.
National Recognition
