The Story of What a Girl Wants
In 2003, we meet Daphne Reynolds, a 17-year-old American girl. She lives in New York City with her mom, Libby. Libby is a wedding singer.
Daphne's Parents and a Secret
Years ago, Libby met a British man named Henry Dashwood in Northern Africa. They got married in a special ceremony. They then went back to his family's big home in the United Kingdom. Soon after, Henry's father passed away, and Henry became a Lord.
Henry's family advisor, Alastair Payne, tricked Libby into leaving. He told her it was better for Henry's important duties if she left. Alastair then lied to Henry, hiding that Libby was pregnant. He told Henry that Libby left because she loved someone else.
Libby always told Daphne who her father was. But Daphne still felt like something was missing because she didn't know him.
Daphne's Big Trip to London
When Daphne finished high school, she decided to go to London. She wanted to find her father and finally meet him.
Meanwhile, Henry was trying to become a member of the House of Commons. This is a part of the British government, like a parliament. He hoped to become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom one day. Alastair was pushing him hard as his political helper.
Henry was also engaged to Alastair's daughter, Glynnis. Glynnis was very snobby, and so was her teenage daughter, Clarissa.
New Friends and Family
Daphne checked into a hostel in London. There, she met Ian Wallace. Ian was a local boy who worked at the hostel. He wanted to be a musician. Ian showed Daphne around London, and they became friends. Soon, they started dating.
When Henry found Daphne at his big house, he was shocked to learn he had a daughter. But his mother, Jocelyne, was very happy. She welcomed Daphne right away and gave her a room.
After talking to Libby on the phone, Henry was excited to get to know Daphne. Daphne tried to fit in with her father's fancy friends. But Glynnis and Clarissa often tried to stop her.
Daphne also had to deal with Armistead Stewart. He was an arrogant, rich boy whom Clarissa liked. Daphne ended up pushing him into the River Thames!
Daphne's New Life and Challenges
Daphne accidentally charmed many important people, even the elderly Princess Charlotte. But Henry's political campaign started to struggle because of Daphne's wild behavior. Henry asked her to act more like a proper Dashwood. When she did, Henry's poll numbers quickly got better.
Ian was sad about Daphne's new behavior. It got worse when she missed their date to go to a fancy party.
Truth and Consequences
At Daphne's coming-out party, which her father hosted, Libby also came. Daphne overheard Alastair telling Glynnis how he made Libby leave seventeen years ago. When Daphne faced him, Glynnis locked her in another room.
Glynnis then asked Ian, who was singing with the band, to announce the father-daughter dance. She knew Henry would have to dance with Clarissa. Libby freed Daphne, but when they saw Henry dancing with Clarissa, Daphne felt upset. She told Henry she was going back to America.
Some time later, Henry surprised everyone. He announced he was leaving the election. As he left a press conference, Henry found out that Alastair knew Libby was pregnant and had tricked them. Henry punched Alastair and then broke off his engagement to Glynnis.
A Happy Ending
Daphne was working as a caterer at a wedding where Libby was singing. When the father-daughter dance started, Henry showed up! He told Daphne he loved her just the way she was. Daphne hugged him and called him "Dad" for the first time.
Daphne finally got the father-daughter dance she had always wanted. Henry told Daphne he had a big apology gift for her. Then Ian appeared and asked her to dance. As Ian and Daphne danced, Henry apologized to Libby, and they started dancing too.
In the end, Glynnis married a rich nobleman, and Clarissa married Armistead. Alastair ended up working on a London tour bus. Libby and Henry got married again in a legal ceremony. Daphne was accepted into Oxford and was still dating Ian.
