Wheatland is a town located in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,391 people lived there. Some smaller communities like Powers Lake, Lily Lake, New Munster, and Slades Corners are also part of Wheatland.
The main settled area of the town is along 328th Avenue (Kenosha County Highway W), north of 60th Street (Kenosha County Highway K). A railway line, once used for passengers and freight, also runs through the town.

Geography of Wheatland
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Wheatland covers a total area of about 62.3 square kilometers (24.1 square miles). Most of this area, about 61.5 square kilometers (23.7 square miles), is land. The remaining 0.8 square kilometers (0.3 square miles), or 1.36%, is water.
History of Wheatland
Early Settlers and Naming
The first people to settle in Wheatland were Schuyler Bonday in August 1837 and Adolph Reitbrook in September 1837. The town of Wheatland was officially formed on May 7, 1842. It was named "Wheatland" because wheat grew very well in the rich soil of the area. The first constable, James B. Powers, gave his name to Powers Lake.
County Changes Over Time
When the Town of Wheatland was first created, it was part of Racine County. However, on January 30, 1850, the town was moved to Kenosha County. It has remained in Kenosha County ever since.

January 2008 Tornado
Impact of the Tornado
On January 7, 2008, a powerful tornado hit the town of Wheatland. This tornado was rated as an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This means its winds were estimated to be very strong, between 140 and 150 miles per hour.
The tornado traveled for about 10.8 miles (17.4 kilometers) and was about 200 yards (183 meters) wide. It caused a lot of damage, destroying 25 houses and damaging around 100 more. Because of this, 160 people lost their homes or could not return to them. The total damage from the tornado was estimated to be about $18 million.
