When We Were Very Young is a super popular book of poems written by A. A. Milne. It was first published in 1924. The lovely pictures inside were drawn by E. H. Shepard. Many of the poems were even turned into songs by Harold Fraser-Simson.

The book starts with a special introduction called "Just Before We Begin." In this part, readers are asked to imagine who is telling the stories. It even suggests it might be Christopher Robin, Milne's own son.

One very important poem in the book is "Teddy Bear." This poem first appeared in Punch magazine in February 1924. It's famous because it was the first time the world met the character Winnie-the-Pooh! Christopher Robin Milne first called him "Mr. Edward Bear." In one drawing for "Teddy Bear," Winnie-the-Pooh wears a shirt. This shirt was later colored red for a recording by Stephen Slesinger. That red shirt then became Pooh's classic look in all the Disney cartoons.
