What's in a Name? The Story of Whitby
Whitby gets its name from the nearby Whitby Falls. The name for this area was officially approved in November 1988.
How Whitby Falls Got Its Name
Before it was called Whitby Falls, the local Noongar people knew the falls as Mundajill. In 1848, a settler named Henry Mead bought land in the area for farming. He renamed the falls and his property the Whitby Falls estate.
Whitby Falls Hospital
Later, in 1897, the government of Western Australia bought the land. They turned it into the Whitby Falls Hospital. This hospital was a special place where people could get support and care for their mental health. It was a very important facility for a long time. The Whitby Falls Hospital closed in 2006. It had been open longer than any other similar facility in Western Australia.
