About the White-shouldered Antbird

The white-shouldered antbird is a type of bird. It is part of the Thamnophilidae family. This family includes many birds that live in forests. They often eat insects.

Where It Lives

This antbird lives in parts of South America. You can find it in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It prefers specific places to live. Its favorite home is in subtropical or tropical swamps. These are warm, wet areas with lots of trees.

How It Got Its Name

The white-shouldered antbird was first described in 1825. A German scientist named Johann Baptist von Spix studied and drew it. He gave it its first scientific name, Thamnophilus melanoceps.

Later, scientists moved it to a different group. This group was called Myrmeciza.

Changing Names in Science

Scientists are always learning new things. They use special studies to understand birds better. A study in 2013 looked at the genes of these birds. It showed that the Myrmeciza group was not quite right.

Because of this new information, scientists changed the bird's group again. They moved it to a group called Akletos. This group was first named in 1948. So, the white-shouldered antbird's official scientific name is now Akletos melanoceps. This helps scientists keep track of all the different kinds of birds.
