A Look at White Castle's History
The town of White Castle was created from a large farm called "White Castle" plantation, which belonged to George Wailes. Near this area, you can also find the Nottoway Plantation, a very old and famous mansion built before the American Civil War.
How White Castle Started
White Castle became a town in the 1880s. Many people moved there because of the growing logging industry. They cut down lots of cypress trees from the nearby swamps.
When most of the cypress trees were gone, the town's main business went back to the sugar cane industry. This industry had been important in the area since the late 1700s.
Sugar Mills and Local Businesses
Over time, smaller sugar mills on individual farms were replaced by bigger mills that served many farms. By 1970, White Castle had three large sugar mills. Today, only one, called Cora Texas, is still working. It's located just south of White Castle.
In the past, people from nearby areas like Samstown and Bayou Goula would come to White Castle to shop. The town had many different stores, including clothing stores, a shoe store, a jewelry store, and grocery stores. There was even a movie theater called Castle Theater, which closed in 1959.
The Chemical Industry Arrives
In the 1950s, chemical companies started building plants along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. This brought new jobs and helped White Castle's economy grow into the 1980s.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living within White Castle's town limits has stayed between 1,900 and 2,200 for the last forty years. However, the areas just outside the town have seen their populations grow.
