The Story of Whitehall
How Whitehall Got Its Name
Whitehall likely got its name from a tavern owned by Silas D. Prior. This tavern was called "White Hall" in the 1850s. The old building still exists today, but it is now in Brentwood. Another idea is that the area was once known as Whitehall Driving Park. This park was located within Baldwin Township.
Becoming an Independent Town
In 1946, people living in certain parts of Baldwin Township wanted to form their own town. They started a process called "secession," which means separating from a larger area to become independent. On October 14, 1946, they submitted a request with 1,320 signatures.
Baldwin Township officials tried to stop this. They wanted to make Baldwin Township a borough itself, because it's harder to separate from a borough than from a township. However, on January 5, 1948, Whitehall officially separated from Baldwin Township. It became its own independent municipality. Former mayor Edwin F. Brennan said that Whitehall residents wanted better services and clearer rules for building and land use (called "zoning") than they had under the township.
