Where Does the Water Come From?
Whiteoak Creek Falls is found on Whiteoak Creek. Imagine a small stream flowing into a bigger river; that small stream is called a tributary. Whiteoak Creek is a tributary that flows into the South Toe River. The South Toe River then joins the North Toe River, which eventually carries its water much further away.
How Tall is the Waterfall?
Whiteoak Creek Falls isn't just one single drop! It's actually a series of smaller waterfalls, like steps, called cascades and slides. While the tallest single drop is about 20 feet (that's like two tall basketball players stacked up!), the whole waterfall area stretches over 80 feet long. It's like a long, watery staircase!
Visiting Whiteoak Creek Falls
Finding Whiteoak Creek Falls can be a bit of an adventure! If you're starting from the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 80, you'll drive north on Highway 80. After about 5 miles, turn left onto White Oak Road (SR1156). Drive another half mile or so, then turn left again onto White Oak Creek Road (SR1157). This road ends after about 1.5 miles. You can park there and then walk up an old logging road. Look for smaller paths that lead down to the bottom of the falls.
Back in July 2009, a big tree fell into the creek between the lower and upper parts of the falls. This means that from the bottom, you might not be able to see the very top section of the waterfall as clearly.
