Whitlash is a small, unincorporated community located in the northwestern part of Liberty County, Montana, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Where is Whitlash?

Whitlash is found in the state of Montana, very close to the border with the Canadian province of Alberta. It's only about five miles (8 kilometers) south of Canada!

Sweet Grass Hills

This community is also near the East Butte of the Sweet Grass Hills. These hills are very important landmarks in the Great Plains. For American Indians, these hills were sacred. They used them for hunting, battles, spiritual ceremonies, and even for finding their way around.

Getting to Whitlash and its Population

It's a bit of an adventure to get to Whitlash because you can only reach it by unpaved roads. The border crossing into Canada, called the Whitlash Border Crossing, is about five miles north.

In 2014, Whitlash had a population of 35 people. This number had grown quite a bit since the year 2000. However, by the 2020 census, the population was recorded as 4 people.

Post Office and School

Whitlash has a post office and an elementary school. The school teaches students from prekindergarten all the way up to 8th grade.

The post office in Whitlash first opened way back in 1892. Over the years, it moved six times! Finally, in 1905, Alfred and Tom Strode created a townsite on Half Breed Creek, and the post office settled there. The U.S. Customs office also operated out of Whitlash from 1933 until 1969, when it moved directly to the border.
