Whitmore Lake is a small community in the state of Michigan, USA. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined for counting people, but it's not a full city or town. It is also an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.
The community is located across two different counties: Livingston County and Washtenaw County. In 2020, about 7,584 people lived in Whitmore Lake.

History of Whitmore Lake
The area where Whitmore Lake is today was first settled in 1825. Two land surveyors, Johnathon Stratton and Luke Whitmore, came from a nearby settlement called Ann Arbor.
Stratton suggested naming the new area and the lake after Luke Whitmore. So, it became known as Whitmore Lake on maps. Luke Whitmore himself owned land in the area and became the first county treasurer in 1829.
A post office opened in the community on June 9, 1834. George Dexter was the first postmaster. At first, the post office was called Northfield. This was because of its location in Northfield Township. However, its name was changed to Whitmore Lake on December 27, 1854.
Geography and Location
Whitmore Lake is a community built around the shores of a lake also named Whitmore Lake. It also includes areas around smaller lakes nearby. These include Horseshoe Lake to the south, Lawton Lake to the east, and Monahan Lake to the northeast.
The community is about 9 miles (14 km) north of Ann Arbor. It is also about 9 miles (14 km) south of Brighton.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the total area of the CDP is about 6.01 square miles (15.56 square kilometers). A good part of this area is water. About 1.21 square miles (3.14 square kilometers), or 20.37%, is water. The land area is about 4.79 square miles (12.42 square kilometers).
Major Roads in Whitmore Lake
Several important roads pass through or near Whitmore Lake:
US 23 is a major highway that runs north and south. It forms most of the western edge of the community.
M-36 is another state highway. It ends where it meets US 23 in Whitmore Lake.
- Some of the "Mile Roads" in the Detroit area also end in Whitmore Lake. These include 6 Mile Road, 7 Mile Road, 8 Mile Road, and 9 Mile Road.

Whitmore Lake is known for its fun community events throughout the year.
Fourth of July Celebration
Every year, Whitmore Lake hosts a big weekend celebration for Independence Day. In 2011, it was the 52nd year of this tradition.
Typical events include a fireworks show over the lake. There's also a boat parade and a special ski show by the Whitmore Lake Water Ski Club. People can also join a running or swimming race, along with many other fun activities.
Harvest Festival
The Whitmore Lake Harvest Festival is a two-day event held every year in late September. It started in 2007. One of the main goals of the 2009 Harvest Festival was to help pets find homes or to raise money for animal causes.
Michigan Pond Hockey Classic
The Michigan Pond Hockey Classic is a yearly ice hockey tournament for adults. It takes place on Whitmore Lake. This event began in 2008. It helps raise money to support young people playing sports in families and schools.
Education for Students
The community of Whitmore Lake is served by the Whitmore Lake Public Schools district. The high school sports teams are called the Whitmore Lake High School Trojans. They are part of the Tri-County Conference.
Famous People from Whitmore Lake
- Dave Alexander was a musician. He was a member of the very famous band The Stooges. He was born in Whitmore Lake.
