Whittier is a small community in western North Carolina, a state in the United States. It is located in both Jackson and Swain counties. In 2020, a count of the population showed that 25 people lived there.
Whittier is found along the Tuckasegee River. It is located between Bryson City to the west and Dillsboro to the southeast. The community has its own Post Office, which is located at 22 Main Street.
History of Whittier
Whittier was started in 1881 by Dr. Clarke Whittier. He bought a very large piece of land, about 60,000 acres, in the area. From 1887 to 1933, Whittier was officially a town. However, the town became much smaller after the lumber industry faced big problems during the Great Depression.
