Wikia is a special kind of website where people can create their own online encyclopedias, called wikis. It was started in 2004 by Jimmy Wales, who also helped create Wikipedia, and Angela Beesley.
Wikia used to be known as Wikicities. The name was changed to Wikia on March 27, 2006. This change helped make it clear that the site was not just for wikis about cities.
What is Fandom?
Fandom is a website where you can find wikis about almost any topic you can imagine. These topics are usually things that many people are interested in. For example, you can find wikis about your favorite movies, video games, TV shows, or books.
All the information on Fandom is available for everyone to use freely. This means that anyone can change or add to the pages on these wikis. Because many people can contribute, it helps create large online communities of fans. The website uses a special software called MediaWiki, which is the same software Wikipedia uses.
How Fandom Works
Fandom makes money by showing advertisements on its pages. This is different from Wikipedia, which relies on donations from people.
One cool thing about Fandom is that it can have articles about topics that might not be famous enough for Wikipedia. This means you can find very detailed information on Fandom about specific characters or events from your favorite fictional worlds. Sometimes, these articles are written as if the fictional characters and stories are real. This is called an "in-universe" style.
In August 2010, Fandom got a new look. This update made some people decide to move their wikis to other services.
Popular Wikis on Fandom
There are many wikis on Fandom, and some are very large and well-known. For example, LyricWiki is one of the biggest wikis on Fandom. It has over 1 million articles, mostly about song lyrics.
