Wilbur Holland (born November 8, 1951 – died October 15, 2022) was an American professional basketball player. He was a talented guard known for his scoring and ability to steal the ball.
Holland played college basketball before joining the NBA. He later played professionally in Europe.
Early Life and College Basketball
Wilbur Holland grew up in Columbus, Georgia. He was 6 feet tall and played as a guard. He attended Morristown College from 1971 to 1973. After that, he played for the University of New Orleans from 1973 to 1975.
During his time at the University of New Orleans, Holland was a top scorer. He led his team in points for two seasons (1973–1975). In his final year, he was recognized as a Second Team All-America player by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This showed he was one of the best college players in the country.
NBA Career Highlights
After college, Wilbur Holland was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1975 NBA draft. He played one season with the Hawks. Then, he joined the Chicago Bulls in 1976 and stayed with them until 1979.
Holland had his best NBA season in 1977–1978. During this year, he averaged 16.6 points per game. He also averaged 3.8 assists, 2.0 steals, and 3.6 rebounds per game. He was especially good at stealing the ball. He ranked among the NBA's top ten players for total steals twice in his career. This happened in the 1976–1977 and 1977–1978 seasons.
Later Career and Legacy
After his time in the NBA, Wilbur Holland continued his basketball career overseas. He played for Scavolini Pesaro in Italy from 1980 to 1981. He then played for Tours BC in France from 1981 to 1983.
In 2002, Wilbur Holland was honored for his basketball achievements. He was inducted into the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame. This recognized his important contributions to the sport.
