Wild Horse Lake has a small but interesting place in history. In July 1888, the area around the lake was involved in a disagreement. This disagreement was part of a "county seat fight" in Stevens County, Kansas. A county seat is the main town where the government offices for a county are located. Different towns wanted to be the county seat.
During this time, the area where Wild Horse Lake is located was known as No Man's Land. This meant that no specific state or territory had full control over it. Because of this, it was hard to enforce laws or hold people accountable for actions that happened there. This made the situation even more complicated during the county seat dispute.
