What's in a Name? The Story of Hooker
The city of Hooker got its name from a local cattle foreman. His name was John “Hooker” Threlkeld. He arrived in the area way back in 1873.
The name "Hooker" is sometimes seen as unusual. Because of this, the city has a special saying. Their motto is: "It's a location, not a vocation." This means it's a place on a map, not a job.
Hooker's History: How the City Grew
Hooker started to grow thanks to the railroads. In 1902, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway built tracks. These tracks went from Liberal, Kansas through the Hooker area. They continued southwest to the Texhoma, Texas area.
Two years later, in 1904, the Chicago Townsite Company helped organize the city. They sold lots of land for homes and businesses. The city quickly became bigger. Later, in 1927, another railroad, the Beaver, Meade and Englewood Railroad (BM&E), built a line to Hooker. This line ran from east to west.
