Exploring Wildschönau
Wildschönau is known for its "gentle" tourism. This means it focuses on a more relaxed and natural experience, unlike bigger, busier ski resorts like nearby Kitzbühel. The area has two main tourist seasons: summer and winter.
Winter Fun
In winter, Wildschönau is a great place for skiing and snowboarding. The Schatzberg ski area in Auffach has modern chair lifts. In 2012, a new lift connection was built, linking Wildschönau with the Alpbach valley. This made the ski area even bigger and more exciting!
Summer Adventures
When the snow melts, the valley becomes a perfect spot for hiking, biking, and enjoying nature. The beautiful mountains and green fields offer lots of outdoor activities.
Farming and Community
Besides tourism, farming is very important here, especially in the highlands. Many people also travel to work in other towns nearby. Wildschönau keeps a good balance between welcoming visitors and keeping its traditional way of life.
Mountains Around the Valley
The Wildschönau valley is surrounded by impressive mountains.
Western Mountains
On the western side, you'll find mountains like Gratlspitz, Schatzberg, Joelspitze, Lämpersberg, Kleiner Beil, and Großer Beil. Großer Beil is the tallest mountain in the valley! The Sonnjoch is also on this side.
Eastern Mountains
To the east, there are mountains such as Roßkopf, Feldalphorn, Schwaiberghorn, Breiteggern, and Breiteggspitze.
Valley Entrance
In the north, a lower mountain range separates the valley from the Inn Valley. This range is split by a cool gorge called the Kundler Klamm. At the very end of the valley, there's a flatter pass called the Schafsiedeljoch.
A Look at History
Wildschönau has a long history! The first time it was ever mentioned in writing was way back in 1193–95. This was when a Bavarian count named Henry of Lechsgemünd-Rettenberg gave some of his people to the Herrenchiemsee monastery. A person named «Adelbertus de Wiltsconenŏwe» (Albert of Wildschönau) was mentioned in the official document from that time. For a long time, people also used to mine for minerals here.
The Dragon Legend and Coat of Arms
Wildschönau has a cool legend about how the valley was formed! People say that a long, long time ago, the high valley was actually a big lake. A scary dragon lived on its shores.
One day, a brave farmer managed to kill the dragon. As the dragon struggled in its last moments, it smashed the rocks that were holding the lake back. The water then rushed down through the broken rocks, creating a narrow passage called the Kundler Klamm, which leads to the Inn valley. Once the water drained away, the beautiful high valley of Wildschönau appeared!
The official Coat of arms for Wildschönau shows this legendary dragon. It's pictured breaking through the rock, just like in the story.
