William Berkeley, 4th Baron Berkeley of Stratton (died 24 March 1741), was an important British politician and judge. He was part of the Bruton branch of the Berkeley family. He served as the Master of the Rolls in Ireland for many years, from 1696 to 1731. He also held other big jobs in the government, like Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1710 to 1714 and First Lord of Trade from 1714 to 1715.

Who Was William Berkeley?

William Berkeley was the third son of John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. His mother was Christiana, daughter of Sir Andrew Riccard. William had two older brothers. Charles was a naval captain who held the family title for two years. John was an admiral who held the title for 16 years. William lived much longer than his brothers. We don't know his exact birth date. He was likely born between 1663 and 1672. This would mean he was around 70 years old when he passed away in 1741.

William's Career in Government

Becoming a Judge in Ireland

In 1696, William Berkeley was chosen to be the Master of the Rolls in Ireland. This was a very important legal job. At the same time, he became a member of the Irish Privy Council. This group advised the King or Queen on important matters in Ireland.

Taking on More Important Roles

The next year, William became the 4th Baron Berkeley of Stratton. This happened after his older brother passed away. In 1710, he joined the English Privy Council. This was a similar advisory group, but for Great Britain. He was also appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This role involved managing land and property for the King.

In 1714, he was given another big job: First Lord of Trade. This position meant he was in charge of trade and business for the country. He held this job until 1715. Even with these new roles, he continued to be the Master of the Rolls in Ireland until 1731.

William's Family Life

Lady Berkeley of Stratton, William's wife, passed away in July 1707. Lord Berkeley of Stratton remained a widower. He died in March 1741 in Bruton, Somerset. His oldest son, John, took over the family title after him.
