William Clayton Anderson (born December 26, 1826 – died December 23, 1861) was an American lawyer and politician from the 1800s. He served as a representative for Kentucky in the United States House of Representatives.
Early Life and Education
William Clayton Anderson was born in Lancaster, Kentucky. His father was Simeon H. Anderson, and his uncle was Albert G. Talbott. William went to private schools when he was younger.
In 1845, he graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. After college, he studied law. He then passed his exams to become a lawyer. He started his law practice in Lancaster. In 1847, he moved to Danville and continued working as a lawyer there.
Political Career and Service
Anderson began his political career in Kentucky. From 1851 to 1853, he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state of Kentucky.
In 1856, he supported Millard Fillmore for president. Fillmore was a candidate for the American Party. Anderson was part of the group chosen to officially cast votes for president.
Anderson tried to get elected to the Thirty-fifth Congress but did not win. Two years later, he ran again. This time, he was elected as a member of the Opposition Party. He served in the Thirty-sixth Congress from March 4, 1859, to March 3, 1861.
He decided not to run for reelection to Congress. Instead, he was elected back to the Kentucky House of Representatives. He ran as a Unionist candidate.
His Passing
William Clayton Anderson passed away on December 23, 1861. He died while he was on the floor of the Kentucky House of Representatives. This happened during a session in Frankfort, Kentucky. He was almost 35 years old when he died. He is buried at Bellevue Cemetery in Danville, Kentucky.
