William Eckart Lehman (born August 21, 1821 – died July 19, 1895) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Lehman served as a representative for Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

William E. Lehman's Early Life

William E. Lehman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was on August 21, 1821. He went to school and studied hard. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He graduated from the university in 1841.

Becoming a Lawyer

After college, William Lehman decided to study law. He worked hard to learn about legal rules. In 1844, he passed his exams and became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Philadelphia. Later, President James K. Polk gave him a special job. Lehman became a post office examiner. He checked post offices in Pennsylvania and New York.

Serving in Government

William Lehman became interested in politics. He was elected to the Thirty-seventh Congress. This meant he represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served from 1861 to 1863. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

During the Civil War

The American Civil War was happening during his time in Congress. After his term, Lehman continued to serve his country. He became a United States provost marshal. This was like a military police officer. He held the rank of captain. His job was in the first district of Pennsylvania. He served from April 1863 to June 1865.

Later Years

After the Civil War, William Lehman had enough money. He did not need to work in business or law anymore. He spent his later years in Atlantic City, New Jersey. William E. Lehman passed away in 1895. He was buried in St. Peter's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Philadelphia.
