Founding Windsor
William Filley helped to build the settlement of Windsor. This was a challenging task because of threats from the Dutch. The Dutch also wanted to control this area for trade.
Living with Native American Tribes
The land where Windsor was built was special to the local Algonquian-speaking Native American tribes. They felt the land was sacred. Even so, the tribes stayed somewhat friendly with the new settlers. The settlement acted as a "buffer." This meant it was a protective area between the Algonquian tribes and other, more war-like tribes like the Pequots and Mohawks.
William Filley's Role in Conflict
William Filley was a fighter during the Pequot War. This was a big conflict between the English colonists and the Pequot tribe. His involvement shows how important he was to the early community's defense.
Family Life
William Filley was married to Margaret. They had several children together. It was quite rare for all children in a family to survive to adulthood in the 1600s. Many babies and young children did not live past their first few years. This was called "infant mortality." So, it was special that all of William and Margaret's children grew up.
