William Gunter was born in Raglan, a town in Monmouthshire, Wales. When he was older, he went to study in Reims, France. In 1587, he became a priest there.

William Gunter returned to England during a time when being a Catholic priest was very dangerous. He died on 28 August 1588 in Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. This was shortly after the Spanish Armada, a big naval battle between England and Spain. During this period, Queen Elizabeth I's government made strict laws against Catholics.
