William Judson Holloway Jr. (born June 23, 1923 – died April 25, 2014) was a very important judge in the United States. He served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. This court hears appeals from lower courts in several states, including Oklahoma.
Life and Early Career
William Judson Holloway Jr. was born in Hugo, Oklahoma. He finished high school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1941.
He joined the United States Army during World War II. He served from 1943 to 1947 and became a first lieutenant. After the war, he went to college at the University of Oklahoma. He earned his first degree in 1947. Then, he studied law at Harvard Law School and got his law degree in 1950.
After law school, Holloway worked as a private lawyer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for a year. From 1951 to 1952, he worked as a lawyer for the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.. He then returned to his private law practice in Oklahoma City, where he worked until 1968.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson chose William Holloway to become a judge. He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. This was a new position created by law. The United States Senate approved his appointment, and he officially became a judge on September 16, 1968.
He served as the Chief Judge of this court from 1984 to 1991. This means he was the main leader of the court during those years. In 1992, he became a "senior judge." This is a special role where judges can work less but still help the court. He continued to serve until he passed away on April 25, 2014, in Oklahoma City.
Honors and Legacy
William J. Holloway Jr. was a respected judge. In 2016, a courthouse was named after him: the William J. Holloway Jr. United States Courthouse.
His life and work have also been remembered in other ways:
- An actor named Ben Carlson played Judge Holloway in the 2018 movie On the Basis of Sex. This film is about the early career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
- The Oklahoma City University Law Review, a legal magazine, published a special issue in 2014 to honor him after his death.
