William L. Graul (born July 27, 1846 – died September 2, 1909) was a brave soldier from the Union Army. He fought in the American Civil War. Graul received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the U.S. military.
William L. Graul's Early Life
William L. Graul was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He grew up there and later joined the army. When he was 18 years old, he became a soldier.
A Heroic Act in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, William Graul showed amazing courage. He was a corporal in Company I of the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry.
His brave act happened at Fort Harrison. This was during a big fight called the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. Graul bravely placed the American flag on the enemy's walls. These walls belonged to the Confederate Army.
Another soldier, Cecil Clay, carried the flag for Graul's company. Clay also won the Medal of Honor for his bravery that day. William Graul received his Medal of Honor on April 6, 1865.
Life After the War
After his time in the military, William L. Graul returned home. He later had five children. He lived until September 2, 1909.
