William Irvin Matthews (born November 5, 1983) is an American Christian musician. He began his music journey in 2011. His first album, Hope's Anthem, was released by Bethel Music and Kingsway Music.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
William Irvin Matthews was born on November 5, 1983. His birthplace was Detroit, Michigan. His father was a preacher, and his mother directed a choir.
When William was 12, his family moved. They went to Raleigh, North Carolina. There, he started to develop his skills as a songwriter.
In 2007, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He worked at the International House of Prayer. Later, in 2019, he moved to Redding, California. This move was at the request of Kim Walker-Smith. In Redding, he met Brian and Jenn Johnson. William joined the staff at Bethel Church. He was a member there for eight years.
Becoming an Artist
In 2014, Matthews moved to Los Angeles. He wanted to explore new creative ideas. He also wanted to try a different direction with his music. Even after leaving Bethel Church, he continued to work with Bethel Music. He contributed to their album Have it All (Live).
In 2016, Bethel Music announced that William was no longer connected with them. William later explained his choice. He said that as a worship leader, you have to be many things for many people. He felt he was not just an artist in that role. He preferred to be an artist rather than a worship leader.
