William Everard Pedley (born June 16, 1858 – died July 9, 1920) was a talented English cricketer. He was also a civil engineer. This means he designed and built things like roads, bridges, and water systems. Later, he moved to the United States. In California, he became famous for designing irrigation systems. These systems help bring water to farms and towns. A town in California, Pedley, California, was even named after him! It is now part of Jurupa Valley, California.

Early Life and Cricket in England

William Pedley was born in Wingerworth, Derbyshire, England. His father was Thomas Humphrey Pedley. William became a civil engineer. He joined the Royal Engineers, a part of the British Army.

In 1879, Pedley played two important cricket matches. These were called "first-class" matches. He played for the Sussex team. In one game against Kent, he did very well. He took 7 wickets for only 36 runs. He also scored 16 runs without being out, helping Sussex win. He also played for the Royal Engineers team. Later, in 1888, he played for his home team, Derbyshire.

Life and Work in California

William Pedley later moved to America. He became the manager of the San Jacinto Land Company. This company helped develop land in Riverside, California. Pedley was in charge of designing and building the irrigation system there. An irrigation system brings water to dry land. This was very important for farming in California.

In 1903 or 1904, a railroad company built a station in the area. They named the settlement Pedley, California after him. This town is now part of Jurupa Valley, California. A nearby group of small mountains, called the Pedley Hills, also got their name from him.

Sports Beyond Cricket

Besides cricket, William Pedley also loved to play Polo. Polo is a team sport played on horseback. He was a regular player on the Riverside polo team in California. He even had his own horses for polo.

His son, Eric Pedley, became a professional polo player. Eric was very successful. He won the U.S. Open Polo Championship three times!

Later Life and Passing

William Pedley passed away in Los Angeles, California. He was 62 years old. He became ill during a trip and was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital. Doctors found he had a serious illness, and he died soon after. His funeral was held in Riverside, and he was buried at the Olivewood Cemetery.
