A Look at the William Resor House
The William Resor House is a three-story building. It has some cool features that make it stand out.
What Does It Look Like?
The house has a special roof called a mansard roof. This type of roof slopes on all sides and often has windows built into it. These are called dormer windows. The house also has a big porch that wraps around it, known as a verandah.
The front of the house looks like a simple square. But the porch roof adds more detail. It even includes a small, round structure called a gazebo. This gazebo has a dome-shaped roof and fancy decorations made from cast iron.
How the House Changed Over Time
When the house was first built in 1843, it looked quite different. It was a simple box-shaped building. Its style was known as Greek Revival. This style was popular in the 1800s and was inspired by ancient Greek temples.
Later, in the 1890s, the house got a big makeover. It was even moved to face Greendale Avenue! During this time, new parts like the porch and gazebo were added. The house's style changed to what is called Second Empire. This style often includes mansard roofs and decorative details. Before becoming Second Empire, it also went through a period with a more general Victorian look.
Who Was William Resor?
The William Resor House was built for a man named William Resor. He was a very successful businessman in Cincinnati. Resor made his money from a factory that made stoves.
As he got older, William Resor helped with many important projects in the city. He was involved in starting the famous Cincinnati Zoo. He also helped create the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Protecting Historic Places
The William Resor House is recognized as an important historical building.
Listed on the National Register
In 1973, the Resor House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. The house was added because its old architecture was very well-preserved.
Part of a Historic Neighborhood
Five years later, in 1978, the house became part of an even larger historical area. It is located in the Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati. Many properties in Clifton were grouped together to form a historic district. This district is called the Clifton Avenue Historic District. Being part of a historic district helps protect many old buildings at once.
