Early Life and Education

William Roberts started his education at Gray's Inn in 1622. This was a place where people studied law. Learning about law helped him prepare for his future in politics.

Joining the Parliament Side

During the English Civil War, Sir William Roberts supported the Parliament. This was a big conflict between the King and Parliament. He believed in the Parliament's cause.

He was chosen as one of the people to look into matters concerning the King. However, he did not take part in the main proceedings.

His Political Career

Sir William Roberts became a member of the English Council of State in 1653. This council was like a government body that helped run the country.

He was elected to represent Middlesex in Parliament. He served in the parliaments of 1654 and 1656.

In 1658, Oliver Cromwell created a new group called the House of Peers. Sir William Roberts was chosen to be a member of this important group.

Land and Wealth

Sir William Roberts also became very wealthy. In 1646, he helped sell some church lands. Later, in 1651, he bought several church properties. These included lands in Neasden, Oxgate, Harlesden, and even part of the Westminster Abbey estate.

He also gained more land through his marriage to Eleanor. She was the daughter of Robert Atye and brought land in Hampstead and Kilburn into their family.

After the King returned to power in England, Sir William Roberts kept his properties. He made sure to lease them back when they changed hands. When he passed away in 1662, he left a large amount of money and land to his family.

The Baronet Title

Sometimes, people get confused about Sir William Roberts's title. Some old records wrongly say he became a baronet.

However, it was actually his son, who was also named William, who received the baronet title. This happened on October 4, 1661, while his father was still alive.
