What is the William S. Moorhead Federal Building?
This building is a special place where many parts of the United States government work. These parts are called federal agencies. Before this building was made, these agencies were spread out in many different offices across Pittsburgh. The new building brought them all together.
Why Was the Building Constructed?
The building, first known simply as the Federal Building, cost about $20 million to build. It was finished in 1964. Its main goal was to bring many government offices into one central spot. This made it easier for different parts of the government to work together.
Who Designed and Built It?
The building was designed by a company called Altenhof & Bown. It was built where a Greyhound bus station used to be. The main company that built it was Burchick Construction Company, Inc.
Which Agencies Moved In?
When it first opened, 21 different government groups moved into the building. About 4,000 people worked there. Some of the important groups included:
- The Internal Revenue Service, which handles taxes.
- The Veterans Administration, which helps people who served in the military.
- The Army Corps of Engineers, who work on public works projects.
- The Weather Bureau, which forecasts weather.
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which investigates crimes.
- The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which gathers information for national security.
How Did the Building Get Its Name?
In 1980, the building was home to 35 different federal agencies. It was given a new name: the William S. Moorhead Federal Building. This was done to honor William S. Moorhead, who was a Representative. A Representative is a person elected by citizens to speak for them in the United States Congress.
Who Was William S. Moorhead?
William S. Moorhead was a respected public official. He was retiring from his job as a Representative. Naming a building after him was a way to thank him for his service. Even though some people at the time didn't agree with naming buildings after officials who were still alive or just retiring, the law to rename the building was approved on October 9, 1980.
