William St Clair (died around 1379) was an important Scottish noble. He is known as the 8th Baron of Roslin, a title passed down through his family.

Becoming Baron of Roslin

William St Clair was the son of Sir William St Clair. His grandfather was Henry St Clair, who was the 7th Baron of Roslin.

William's father, Sir William, was a brave knight. He joined a special journey with James Douglas, Lord of Douglas. Their mission was to take the heart of Robert the Bruce, a famous Scottish king, to a holy place in Palestine.

During this journey, they faced a battle in the Emirate of Granada against a group called the Saracens. Sadly, both William's father and James Douglas were killed in this fight. Because of this, young William St Clair became the Baron of Roslin after his grandfather.

Life as Baron

William was still young when he became the Baron. Records from 1348 show his name in official documents. Later, in 1358, David II of Scotland, the king, confirmed a yearly payment for William. This payment had first been given to his grandfather.

The king also gave William important land documents, called charters, in 1358 and 1363. These documents confirmed his ownership of lands like Merton and Merchamyston.

William St Clair was also known for his military adventures. He traveled to Continental Europe to join a crusade, which was a religious war, against the Prussians. Historians note that he went with other Scottish knights, eager for adventure. Records show that William St Clair returned safely from this journey.

Family Life

William St Clair married a woman named Isabella. She was the second daughter of Malise V, Earl of Strathearn, who was also the Earl of Orkney and Earl of Caithness. Isabella later became the only heir to her father's titles.

William and Isabella had a son named Henry I Sinclair, Earl of Orkney. Henry was still a child when his father, William, passed away around 1379.
