William Truslow Newman (born June 23, 1843 – died February 14, 1920) was an important federal judge in the United States. He served on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. This means he was a judge for a specific area in Georgia.

Early Life and Career Path

William Truslow Newman was born on June 23, 1843, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Instead of going to a traditional law school, he learned law by reading law. This means he studied under an experienced lawyer until he was ready to become a lawyer himself in 1866.

Serving in the Civil War

From 1861 to 1865, William Newman was a Captain in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. During this time, he was captured by the enemy at a battle near Johnson's Ferry. Luckily, he was soon released in a prisoner exchange. He went back to fighting and bravely continued his service. However, he lost his right arm during the Battle of Jonesborough.

Legal Work in Atlanta

After the war, Newman started his own law practice in Atlanta, Georgia. He worked as a private lawyer from 1866 to 1871. Then, he became the city attorney for Atlanta, serving from 1871 to 1883. After that, he returned to private law practice until 1886.

Becoming a Federal Judge

William Truslow Newman was chosen to be a federal judge by President Grover Cleveland. He received a special appointment on August 13, 1886. This appointment was for a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He was taking over from Judge Henry Kent McCay.

Official Appointment and Service

President Cleveland officially nominated Newman for the judge position on December 9, 1886. The United States Senate approved his appointment on January 13, 1887. He officially became a judge on the very same day.

Judge Newman served for many years. On July 31, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared that Judge Newman was unable to continue his duties due to a disability. Because of a law passed in 1919, this allowed the President to appoint another judge for the court. However, no one was appointed to replace Judge Newman directly. Instead, Samuel Hale Sibley was appointed to an additional judge position created for the court.

Judge Newman's service as a federal judge ended on February 14, 1920, when he passed away in Atlanta.
