William Wallace McCammon (born May 28, 1838 – died March 27, 1903) was a brave soldier. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He earned the highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his amazing courage.
A Hero's Story
William Wallace McCammon was born in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army. He became a First Lieutenant in Company E. This company was part of the 24th Missouri Infantry.
Bravery at Corinth
Lieutenant McCammon showed incredible bravery during a big battle. This battle was fought at Corinth, Mississippi, on October 3, 1862. It is known as the Second Battle of Corinth. His company faced many challenges and lost many soldiers.
Even though things were tough, Lieutenant McCammon did not give up. He bravely took charge of his company. He led them through the fighting. His leadership helped push back the enemy forces the next day.
The Medal of Honor
For his actions at Corinth, William Wallace McCammon was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive. He got this special award on July 9, 1896. It was given to him many years after the battle.
Life After the War
After the Civil War, William Wallace McCammon continued his military career. He stayed in the army and rose through the ranks. He eventually became a Major. He also served in the Spanish–American War later in his life.
Major McCammon passed away on March 27, 1903. He died in Vancouver, Washington. He was buried with honor at the Fort Vancouver Military Cemetery.
