Williams Township is home to two smaller, unincorporated communities. These are places that don't have their own separate local government.
Fisherville
Fisherville is one of these communities. You can find it where 11 Mile Road and Midland Road meet. It sits at an elevation of about 640 feet (195 meters) above sea level.
North Williams
The other community is called North Williams. This area is located where Garfield Road and Wheeler Road cross paths.
A Look Back at Williams Township History
Williams Township has a history that includes several post offices. These offices were important for sending and receiving mail long ago.
Early Post Offices in the Township
The first Williams Post Office opened on August 26, 1868. It was in the area we now call North Williams. This office served the community until April 10, 1874.
Later, on March 20, 1891, the North Williams Post Office opened. It was a bit east of the current North Williams area, at Garfield and Wheeler roads. Another post office, called Colden, started on April 22, 1891. It was near the border with Midland County.
Changes and Closures Over Time
The Laredo Post Office opened in what is now Fisherville on August 19, 1892. It closed for a short time in 1898 but reopened in 1899. The North Williams Post Office closed permanently on May 15, 1903. The Laredo Post Office closed again on April 30, 1906. Finally, the Colden Post Office stopped operating on January 15, 1907.
