William Law Anderson (born October 21, 1879 – died October 25, 1910) was an amazing golfer from Scotland. He moved to the United States and became the first person ever to win four U.S. Opens. He won in 1901, 1903, 1904, and 1905.
Willie Anderson is still the only golfer to win the U.S. Open three times in a row! Only a few other golf legends, like Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus, have won four U.S. Open titles in total. Because of his incredible achievements, Willie Anderson is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Golf Start
Willie Anderson was born in a town called North Berwick in Scotland. He went to public school there. By the time he was 11 years old, he was already a licensed caddie on the local golf course, the West Links. A caddie helps golfers by carrying their clubs and giving advice.
After school, Willie started learning how to make golf clubs. He worked as an apprentice for a club maker named Alex Aitken in Gullane.
Moving to America
In March 1896, when Willie was 18, he moved from Scotland to the United States. He sailed on a ship called the S.S. Poseidon with his father, Thomas Anderson, and his brother, Tom. They arrived at Ellis Island in New York City.
Just one year later, in 1897, Willie played in his first U.S. Open. He almost won, finishing in second place by just one shot!
Willie Anderson's Golf Career
Willie Anderson's first big win was in 1899 at the Southern California Open. After that, he started his amazing winning streak at the U.S. Open. He played in 14 U.S. Opens in a row. Out of those 14 tournaments, he won four times. He also finished second once, third once, and in the top five many other times.
Willie was skilled enough to win with both types of golf balls used back then: the older gutta-percha ball and the newer rubber-cored ball, which became popular around 1902.
Other Important Wins
Besides his U.S. Open victories, Willie Anderson also won the Western Open four times. He won this tournament in 1902, 1904, 1908, and 1909. The Western Open is the second-oldest golf tournament in the U.S. Some golf experts even consider it a major championship during Willie's time.
Willie was known for being very accurate with all his golf clubs. He also stayed calm and focused, even when under a lot of pressure. These skills made him a very tough and respected competitor.
Life as a Golf Professional
Willie Anderson made his living as a professional golfer. This meant he played golf for money and also worked at golf clubs. He worked at ten different golf clubs in just 14 years! From 1901 to 1906, his main club was the Apawamis Club in Rye, New York. Besides playing in big tournaments, he also played many special challenge matches against other golfers for prizes.
Willie Anderson's Legacy
Willie Anderson passed away at the age of 31 in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His official cause of death was a medical condition called epilepsy. He had been playing golf in Pennsylvania just a few days before he died.
Willie Anderson was one of the first members of the PGA Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975. His achievements continue to inspire golfers today.
