Willie Hector, Jr. was an American football player. He was born on December 23, 1939. Willie played as an offensive guard. He played for the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League (NFL). He was also part of the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Willie Hector's Early Life

Willie Hector grew up in Mill Valley, California. He played high school football at Tamalpais High School. In 1956, he was recognized as one of the best players in Northern California.

College Sports Career

Willie Hector went to the University of the Pacific. There, he played both football and track for the Pacific Tigers. He was a talented athlete in track and field.

Track and Field Achievements

Willie competed in many track events. These included the hurdles, high jump, long jump, and the 100-yard dash. In 1961, during his senior year, he was named Pacific's Outstanding Track Athlete. Later, in 2001-2002, Willie was honored by being added to the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame.

Willie Hector was chosen by two different professional football leagues. This happened in the 1961 drafts.

NFL Draft Selection

The Los Angeles Rams picked Willie in the fifth round of the 1961 NFL draft. He was the 60th player chosen overall. He played twelve games for the Rams during the 1961 season.

AFL Draft Selection

The San Diego Chargers also drafted Willie. They picked him in the tenth round of the 1961 AFL Draft. He was the 80th player selected in that draft.

Playing in Canada

After playing for the Rams, Willie moved to Canada. He joined the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL. He played for them from 1962 to 1963. He played one game in 1962 and five games in 1963.

Coaching Football

After his playing career, Willie Hector became a coach. He returned to his old high school. He was the head football coach at Tamalpais High School. He coached there from 1965 through 1968.

In his junior year, he was named to the Class 3A all-state high school football team. This was after his team, the Eastside Crusaders, won the WIAA 3A State Championship.
