Willimantic is a small town located in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. In 2020, about 134 people lived there, according to the 2020 census.
Town Name History
Willimantic was not always called by its current name. It was first known as Howard. In 1879, a company called the Willimantic Linen Company built a factory there. This factory made wooden spools for thread. Because of this, the town's name was changed in 1881 to Willimantic. It was named after a town in Connecticut called Willimantic, Connecticut.
The name Willimantic comes from an Algonquian language. This was the language spoken by Native American tribes in the area. The exact meaning of the name is not fully known. Some people think it means "land of the swift running water." Others believe it means "place near the evergreen swamp."
