History of Wilpen Hall
Wilpen Hall was originally built as a summer home for William Penn Snyder and his wife. Mr. Snyder was a very successful businessman. He started a company called the Shenango Furnace Company.
The famous architects George Orth and Brothers designed this grand house. They designed it to look like an English Manor house, which is a large country house. The name "Wilpen" comes from a combination of Mr. Snyder's first and middle names: William Penn.
Construction of Wilpen Hall took place over several years, from 1897 to 1900. In 1930, the estate was passed down to Mr. Snyder's two sons, William Penn Snyder, Jr. and G. Whitney Snyder. The Snyder family continued to live in the home for many years.
Recognized as a Historic Place
Wilpen Hall was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This special list includes places across the country that are important to American history and culture. Being on this list helps protect the building and its history for future generations.
