Geography and Environment
Wilton is located at about 38.4 degrees North and 121.2 degrees West. It covers an area of about 29 square miles (75 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
For a long time, the land around Wilton was used for growing hay and for pasture where animals could graze. Water underground is usually found about 150 to 175 feet (46 to 53 meters) deep.
Flooding in Wilton
Part of Wilton is in the floodplain of the Cosumnes River. This means that during heavy rains, some areas can get flooded. Water might even appear in the streets.
For example, in 1997, during a strong El Niño weather pattern, river banks broke. Some homes in Wilton were flooded up to their rooftops. More recently, on New Year's Eve in 2022, parts of Wilton had to be evacuated. This happened because the Cosumnes River's banks broke again, causing flood warnings.
