Win Myint (born 8 November 1951) is a politician from Myanmar. He was the tenth President of Myanmar from 2018 to 2021. He was removed from his job during a military takeover in 2021.

Before becoming president, he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives. This is like being the leader of one part of the country's parliament. He also served as a member of parliament from 2012 to 2018. Many people saw Win Myint as a close friend and helper of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was a very important leader in Myanmar.

Early Life and Education

Win Myint was born in Nyaung Chaung Village, Danubyu, in the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar. His parents were Tun Kyin and Daw Than.

He went to the Rangoon Arts and Science University. There, he earned a degree in geology, which is the study of Earth's rocks and soil. Win Myint is married to Cho Cho, and they have one daughter named Phyu Phyu Thin.

Political Journey

Starting as a Lawyer

After finishing university, Win Myint became a senior lawyer in 1981. Later, he became a lawyer for the highest court in Myanmar. In 1985, he became a High Court advocate, which is another type of lawyer.

Protests and Elections

Win Myint was put in jail because of his part in the 8888 Uprising. This was a big protest movement in 1988 where many people spoke out for democracy.

He was released from jail in time for the 1990 Myanmar general election. He won a seat in parliament for Danubyu Township. He received a lot of votes, but the military later cancelled the election results. So, he was never allowed to take his seat in parliament.

Return to Politics

Win Myint started his political career again in the 2012 Myanmar by-elections. He won a seat in the Pyithu Hluttaw, which is the lower house of parliament, for the Pathein area. He then became a secretary for a committee that worked on rule of law.

In the 2015 Myanmar general election, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamwe Township. From 2016 to 2018, he served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar.

Becoming President

In March 2018, the previous president, Htin Kyaw, resigned. Win Myint then resigned from his role as Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw. Many people thought this meant he would be chosen as the next president.

On 23 March 2018, the parliament chose Win Myint as their candidate for Vice-President. This was a step towards him becoming president. He won against another candidate with many votes.

On 28 March 2018, the combined houses of parliament voted for the new president. Win Myint was elected as the 10th President of Myanmar. He received 403 out of 636 votes.

As president, on 17 April 2018, Win Myint gave amnesty (a pardon) to 8,500 prisoners. This included some foreigners and people who were jailed for political reasons.

2021 Military Takeover

On 1 February 2021, the military took control of Myanmar in a coup d'état. During this time, Win Myint was detained along with other parliament members, including Aung San Suu Kyi. He was removed from his position as president. The Vice-President, Myint Swe, then became the acting head of state.

Later, in February 2021, Win Myint was accused of breaking rules about gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2021, he and Aung San Suu Kyi were both sentenced to four years in jail.

In April 2024, the military announced that Win Myint had been moved to house arrest. This means he was allowed to stay at home instead of in jail, possibly because of a heat wave. However, some news groups said there was not much proof for this announcement.
