Win Myint (Burmese: ဝင်းမြင့်; MLCTS: wang: mrang. [wɪ́ɰ̃ mjɪ̰ɰ̃]) was born on 8 November 1951. He is a politician from Myanmar. He served as the tenth President of Myanmar from 2018 to 2021. He was removed from his position during a military takeover in 2021.
Before becoming president, Win Myint was the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2016 to 2018. He was also a member of parliament in the House of Representatives (called the Pyithu Hluttaw) from 2012 to 2018. Many people saw Win Myint as a close supporter of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was a very important leader in Myanmar.

Early Life and Education
Win Myint was born in Nyaung Chaung Village. This village is in Danubyu, Ayeyarwady Region, Burma. His parents were Tun Kyin and Than.
He studied at the Rangoon Arts and Science University. He earned a degree in geology. Win Myint is married to Cho Cho. They have one daughter named Phyu Phyu Thin.
Political Journey
Starting as a Lawyer
After finishing university, Win Myint became a lawyer. He worked as a senior lawyer in the High Court in 1981. Later, he became a lawyer for the Supreme Court of Myanmar. In 1985, he became a High Court advocate.
He faced challenges during his early political life. He was held in prison because of his involvement in the 8888 Uprising. This was a big movement for democracy in Myanmar.
Elections and Parliament
Win Myint was released from prison in time for the 1990 Myanmar general election. He successfully ran for a seat in Danubyu Township. He won with a large number of votes. However, the military later cancelled the election results. So, he was not allowed to take his seat.
He returned to politics in the 2012 Myanmar by-elections. He won a seat in the Pyithu Hluttaw, which is the lower house of parliament. He represented the Pathein area. He then became the secretary of a committee that focused on rule of law.
In the 2015 Myanmar general election, he was elected again. This time, he became a Pyithu Hluttaw MP for Tamwe Township. From 2016 to 2018, he served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar.
Becoming President
In March 2018, the previous president, Htin Kyaw, resigned. Win Myint then resigned from his role as Speaker. Many people believed this was a step for him to become the next president.
On 23 March 2018, the Pyithu Hluttaw chose Win Myint as their candidate for Vice-President. This meant he could then run for president. He won against another candidate, Thaung Aye, with many votes.
On 28 March 2018, Win Myint was elected as the 10th President of Myanmar. The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, which is both houses of parliament combined, voted for him. He received 403 out of 636 votes.
As president, Win Myint took some important actions. On 17 April 2018, he allowed about 8,500 prisoners to be released. This group included some political prisoners.
Events of 2021
On 1 February 2021, a military takeover happened in Myanmar. During this event, Win Myint was taken into custody. Other parliament members, including Aung San Suu Kyi, were also detained.
Win Myint was removed from his position as president. Myint Swe, who was a Vice-President, became the acting head of state.
Later, on 4 February 2021, Win Myint faced accusations. He was accused of breaking rules about gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. His trial hearings began on 16 February. On 11 October, a judge formally charged him.
During his testimony on 12 October, Win Myint shared important information. He said that on 1 February, before the military takeover, two senior military generals tried to make him resign. They suggested he resign because of "ill health."
On 6 December 2021, Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi were both given prison sentences.
As of early 2024, the United Nations still lists Win Myint as the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
On 16 April 2024, the military announced that Win Myint had been moved to house arrest. They said this was because of a heat wave. However, some news sources that support democracy questioned this announcement.
