Myint Swe (Burmese: မြင့်ဆွေ; born 24 May 1951) is a politician and former army officer from Myanmar. He has been the Vice President of Myanmar since March 30, 2016. He also served as the acting President of Myanmar for a period.
Myint Swe was the acting president from February 1, 2021, to July 22, 2024. This made him the longest-serving acting president in Myanmar's history. He also acted as president briefly in March 2018 after President Htin Kyaw resigned. Before these roles, he was the chief minister of the Yangon Region from 2011 to 2016. He is a member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, which is linked to the military. He is from the Mon ethnic group and was a lieutenant general in the Myanmar Army.
On February 1, 2021, Myint Swe was named acting president by the Tatmadaw (Myanmar's military). He then declared a state of emergency and officially gave power to the military leader, Min Aung Hlaing. Myint Swe's main job in the military government was to formally approve and renew Min Aung Hlaing's emergency powers.

Military Career
Myint Swe began his military career after graduating from the Defence Services Academy in 1971. He was part of the 15th group to graduate from the academy.
He rose through the ranks, becoming a brigadier general and commander of an infantry division in 1997. In 2001, he was made Commander of the Southeastern Command. He was also a member of the State Peace and Development Council. Later, he became Commander of the Yangon Command and was promoted to major general. He also led the Yangon Division Peace and Development Council.
Myint Swe became the Chief of Military Security Affairs in 2004. In 2006, he took on the role of Chief of Bureau of Special Operations – 5 (BSO-5). In 2005, he became the first person of Mon ethnic background to reach the rank of Lieutenant General.
Political Career
Chief Minister of Yangon Region
After the 2010 general election, President Thein Sein chose Myint Swe to be the chief minister of the Yangon Region. A chief minister is like a governor for a region. He served in this role from 2011 to 2016.
Vice Presidency
On March 11, 2016, members of parliament chosen by the military nominated Myint Swe to be one of Myanmar's Vice Presidents. He received many votes and became the First Vice President in President Htin Kyaw's government. He officially started this job on March 30, 2016.
Acting President
On March 21, 2018, President Htin Kyaw suddenly resigned. According to Myanmar's rules, Myint Swe was sworn in as the acting president. The country's parliament then had seven days to choose a new president.
On February 1, 2021, President Win Myint was removed from office by the military. Myint Swe then became the acting president. He called a meeting of the military-controlled National Defence and Security Council (NDSC). At this meeting, he declared a state of emergency and officially gave power to the military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The military stated that Myint Swe became president according to the country's rules. These rules say the first vice president becomes acting president if the presidency becomes empty.
Myint Swe extended the state of emergency several times, each time for six months. He did not take part in other government activities. In November 2023, he warned about challenges facing the country during a meeting of the NDSC.
On July 18, 2024, state media in Myanmar reported that Myint Swe was having health problems. On July 22, 2024, he took medical leave. He transferred his duties as president to Min Aung Hlaing on an acting basis.
Personal Life
Myint Swe is of Mon descent. He is married to Khin Thet Htay. They have two children.
