Myint Swe (born May 24, 1951) is a politician and retired army officer from Myanmar. He has been the Vice President of Myanmar since March 30, 2016. He also served as the acting President of Myanmar at different times.
Myint Swe was the chief minister of the Yangon Region from 2011 to 2016. He is a member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party. This party is linked to the military. He is also an ethnic Mon. He was a lieutenant general in the Myanmar Army.
Myint Swe was declared acting president by the military, known as the Tatmadaw, on February 1, 2021. This happened during a coup d'état. He then declared a state of emergency. He formally gave power to the coup leader, Min Aung Hlaing. Myint Swe's main job in the military government was to officially approve and extend Min Aung Hlaing's emergency powers.

Early Life and Military Career
Myint Swe joined the Defence Services Academy and finished his studies in 1973. He became a brigadier general in 1997. He was put in charge of the Light Infantry Division 11.
In 2001, he became the Commander of Southeastern Command. He also joined the State Peace and Development Council. Later, he was moved to be the Commander of Yangon Command. He was promoted to major general. He also led the Yangon Division Peace and Development Council.
Myint Swe became the Chief of Military Security Affairs in 2004. This happened after General Khin Nyunt was removed from his position. In 2006, he became Chief of Bureau of Special Operations – 5. He was the first person of Mon background to become a Lieutenant General in 2005.
While leading the Yangon Command, he handled several important events. He arrested family members of General Ne Win in 2002. He also dealt with the Saffron Revolution in 2007. His actions after Cyclone Nargis were criticized.

Chief Minister of Yangon Region
After the general election in 2010, President Thein Sein chose Myint Swe to be the chief minister of the Yangon Region. He was considered for the role of Vice President of Burma in 2012. However, he did not meet the requirements of the Constitution of Burma. This was because his son-in-law was an Australian citizen at that time.
Vice President of Myanmar
On March 11, 2016, military-appointed MPs nominated Myint Swe. They chose him to be one of the Vice Presidents of Myanmar. He received many votes on March 15, 2016. He became the First Vice President in Htin Kyaw's government. He officially started his role on March 30, 2016.
Acting President of Myanmar
On March 21, 2018, Htin Kyaw resigned as President of Myanmar. Myint Swe then became the acting president. The Constitution of Myanmar said that the Assembly had to choose a new president within seven days.
On February 1, 2021, President Win Myint was removed from office by the Tatmadaw. Myint Swe then became the acting president. This allowed him to call a meeting of the military-controlled National Defence and Security Council (NDSC). He declared a state of emergency and officially gave power to Min Aung Hlaing.
The military stated that Myint Swe became president according to the constitution. The constitution says the first vice president becomes acting president if the presidency is empty. Myint Swe extended the state of emergency several times. He said this was due to "extraordinary circumstances."
In November 2023, Myint Swe warned about the country's situation. He said Myanmar was at risk of being "split into various parts" during the civil war.
On July 18, 2024, state media reported that Myint Swe was having health issues. He had been getting medical treatment since early 2024. On July 22, 2024, he took medical leave. He transferred his duties as president to Min Aung Hlaing on an acting basis.
Personal Life
Myint Swe is of Mon background. He is married to Khin Thet Htay. They have two children.
