Windanya became a town because of gold. In the mid-1890s, gold was found in the ground nearby. This discovery brought many people to the area.

A gold mine called Australasia was set up in 1897. More and more people came to work at the mine. Because of the growing population, the government officially made Windanya a town in 1897. This process is called "gazetting" a townsite.
