Windows Server 2019 is a powerful operating system made by Microsoft for servers. Think of a server as a super-computer that provides services to other computers, like hosting websites, running online games, or storing files for a business.
This operating system is part of the Windows Server family and is built on the same core technology as Windows 10. It was first released to the public on October 2, 2018. It was later replaced by Windows Server 2022 in 2021.
Even though a newer version is out, Microsoft still provides security updates for Windows Server 2019. This support is planned to continue until January 9, 2029.

History of the Release
Microsoft announced Windows Server 2019 on March 20, 2018. On the same day, they released a test version for experts to try out. The final version became available for everyone on October 2, 2018.
A Quick Pause and Re-Release
Shortly after its release, Microsoft had to pause the distribution of Windows Server 2019. This was because a bug was found in the regular version of Windows 10 that it was based on. The bug caused some users' files to be deleted by accident when they upgraded their computers.
Since Windows Server 2019 shared the same computer code, Microsoft pulled it from its website to be safe. After fixing the problem, they re-released it on November 13, 2018.
Different Versions for Different Needs
Windows Server 2019 comes in a few different versions, called editions. Each one is designed for a different size of business or type of work.
- Windows Server 2019 Essentials is for small companies with 25 or fewer employees.
- Windows Server 2019 Standard is for larger businesses that have more than 25 employees or need multiple servers for different jobs.
- Windows Server 2019 Datacenter is the most powerful version. It's used for running many "virtual machines" on one physical server. A virtual machine is like having a separate computer running inside another computer.
Cool New Features
Windows Server 2019 added many new tools and improvements to help servers run better and more securely.
Working with Containers
- Support for Kubernetes: This helps manage "containers," which are like neat packages that hold an application and everything it needs to run.
- Linux Containers on Windows: For the first time, this allowed programs designed for the Linux operating system to run inside containers on Windows Server.
Storing and Moving Data
- Storage Spaces Direct: A feature that lets you use standard, less expensive hard drives to create powerful and reliable storage systems.
- Storage Migration Service: A tool that makes it much easier to move files and settings from older servers to a new Windows Server 2019 machine.
- System Insights: Uses artificial intelligence to predict future problems with the server's storage or performance, helping to fix issues before they happen.
Security Upgrades
- Shielded Virtual Machines: This feature adds extra protection to virtual machines, making them very difficult for hackers to break into, even if they get access to the main server.
- Improved Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP): This is like a super-smart security guard for the server. It can spot and stop advanced cyberattacks.
Easier Server Management
- Windows Admin Center: A modern, web-based dashboard that lets you control and monitor your servers from one place.
- OpenSSH Included: This popular tool, used for securely connecting to and controlling computers over a network, was included with Windows for the first time.
Web Browser
When Windows Server 2019 was first released, it did not include the modern Microsoft Edge web browser. Instead, it came with the older Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft added support for Edge in 2020 and encourages server users to install it for better performance and security.
