History of Winfield
Winfield was first established in 1852. The town began to grow significantly with the arrival of the Burlington and Northwestern Railway in late 1876. This new train line connected Winfield to Burlington, a larger city.
The railway line was later extended to Washington by 1880. In 1881, another company, the Burlington and Western Railway, started building a line from Winfield to Oskaloosa. These early railways used a special type of track called a "3 ft gauge," which meant the tracks were narrower than standard ones.
Another important railway, the Chicago, Burlington and Pacific, also built a line through Winfield in 1882. This line was later sold and became part of the Iowa Central Railway. These railways were very important for helping Winfield grow and connect with other towns.
Winfield is also known as the hometown of Bill Bryson Sr., a famous sports reporter.
