History of Winkie
Winkie was once part of a very large property called Cobdogla Station. A "station" in Australia is a huge farm or ranch. On old maps, this area was known as "Wink Wink Paddock." The name "Winkie" might mean "river flats," which are flat areas of land near a river.
Early Development
Between 1911 and 1913, the area was carefully measured and planned. This was done to create channels for water as part of the Berri Irrigation Area. Irrigation helps bring water to dry land for farming.
Soldier Settlement
After World War I, the area was made bigger for "soldier settlement." This was a plan to give land to soldiers who had fought in the war. It helped them start new lives as farmers.
Plans for a Town
In the 1950s, there were ideas to build a proper town with houses in Winkie. However, these plans never happened. Winkie remained a smaller, rural area.
Official Recognition
Winkie was officially recognized as a town on August 20, 1953. Later, on December 3, 1998, it was officially named a "locality." A locality is a specific area or place, often without a formal town center. The town status was removed on January 27, 1972.
