History of Winooski

By 1875, Winooski was a busy little place. It had its own post office where people could send and receive mail. There was also a village hall, which was like a community center for meetings.

The settlement had several important businesses. There were sawmills to cut wood and grist mills to grind grain into flour. A cheese factory made delicious cheese. People could buy everyday items at the general store.

Local craftspeople were also part of the community. A cooper made barrels and wooden containers. A blacksmith worked with metal, making tools and repairing things. There was also a woodworking shop. All these businesses helped the small community thrive. At that time, there were about a dozen houses in the main part of the settlement.
