He first went to the University of Alaska Anchorage. Later, he studied at the University of Lethbridge. There, he played three seasons of university hockey for the Lethbridge Pronghorns team. He scored 23 goals and made 36 assists, totaling 58 points, in 68 games. He also had 88 penalty minutes, showing he played a tough game. In his last year, he was chosen for the Canada West All-Stars team. This team played against the Canada men's national junior ice hockey team.
Starting Professional Hockey

After coming back, Day Chief finished the season strong. The Rapid City Rush head coach, Joe Ferras, was very impressed. He said Day Chief played "fearless" and "hard." He also mentioned that Winston was "strong on the pucks" and had "great hands for a big man." On August 29, 2013, the Rapid City Rush announced that Day Chief would play for them again in the 2013–14 season.
