Winterhawk was a heavy metal band from San Francisco, California. It started in 1978. The band's leader was Nik "Winterhawk" Alexander. He was the main singer, guitar player, and wrote the songs. Nik was also a Cree musician, which means he was part of a Native American group.
Their first album, Electric Warriors, came out in 1979. It was produced by Tom Bee. Their second album, Dog Soldier, was released in 1980. This album featured Jon Gibson on drums and backing vocals. Jon Gibson later became famous in Christian music. Both Electric Warriors and Dog Soldier were re-released in 2021 by Don Giovanni Records.
Winterhawk supported a movement for Native American people to make healthy choices. They used their music to encourage people to live without harmful substances. This was similar to the "straight edge" movement in hardcore music. Winterhawk played at the 1983 US Festival. They also opened concerts for famous artists like Tina Turner, Santana, Country Joe and the Fish, Steve Miller, and Van Halen. The band stopped playing together in 1984. Nik Alexander passed away on July 5, 2017, after battling cancer.
